we often get asked why are you pregnant for 40 weeks?? the wonderful miracle of pregnancy is estimated to be around 280 days….mmmm thats quite a bit- to be precise it is 40 weeks long because it is dated from the first day of your last glorious (well this particular one was!) period rather than when conception actually and physically took place!!!! that might confuse the guys but us future mummies are with it at this stage of the game! so in reality when you take this all into  consideration you are actually pregnant for approximately 38 weeks so about 266 days as conception (mmm when the magic happens!) usually occurs about two weeks after the first day of your period…

so basically once you have missed your first period this is often described as being in week four of your pregnancy even though your future baby is only about 2 weeks old…. it is at this stage that a pregnancy test pretty much confirms your pregnancy as over the counter pregnancy tests now are about 99 per cent accurate.  trust me they are….. after my first little one was only 13 weeks old I started to feel really tired and exhausted….. anyway I put it down to having my first newborn and adjusting to the broken sleep etc however after a few more weeks I started to feel even worse! and it just so reminded me of being pregnant the first time that I said maybe I should do a pregnancy test as I was very nausea’s as well…. so I did and whammo it came back positive…. I quickly rang my doctor and asked him if I could come and do a pregnancy blood test to prove the counter test was wrong and guess what he said….. don’t bother as they are so accurate now… you need to come in and work out how many weeks you are as I was breastfeeding my first one who was only 15 weeks old and I did not have my period yet to determine a date…. so bottom line is they are 99 per cent accurate!  (for those who are curious when I did my ultrasound scan I was determined to be 10 weeks pregnant - yes catalina was only 15 weeks old at that stage!)  

I now have two adorable children who are only 10 months apart - my gorgeous catalina and my adorable little man leo!

hope this gives you some joy and reinforces that breastfeeding is no contraception! I am living living proof….. whilst I would not change it for the world it was hard and I would not recommend having two children so close together unless you are a very patient person (mmm I quickly had to acquire this??) and have a wonderful support network of friends and family around you - lucky for me I did - thanks to all! love h xoxoxo
